Shark Portable Steam Pocket Review

While the kids and I were out of town, my husband decided to do some cleaning.  This is a guest post from Craig about the latest tool he’s added to his domestic arsenal.

When I am left at home alone, or when I accidentally make my coffee too strong, or when I’m just plain bored, I have to clean. Last weekend, my wife and kids were out of town.  I decided to make myself some coffee and dumped a little extra in to finish off the bag.  There was no preseason football on TV. This ill-timed chain of events led me to buy the Shark Portable Steam Pocket (~$75).  We already have the Shark Steam mop (~$90), but we needed something that could clean furniture and carpet stains and maybe even clean the grime off the shower floor.

You can get this at Target.com, but I needed my fix right away, so I ended up going to three brick and mortar Target stores before finding one. I quickly figured out what Target.com meant by ‘limited quantity’.

The Shark Steam mop and Portable Steam Pocket are definitely green products because they only need plain water to work their magic.  The mop version does a great job on wood floors and tile and is cheaper to operate since you don’t need any cleaning solutions. If you match this with the best cordless stick vacuum for hardwood floors, you will have a serious combo. Another great attribute is that the cleaning surface is washable so you’re not generating trash or having to buy replacements.  So I figured that I would get similar results with the small portable version.

As it turns out, kids stain everything… carpet, furniture, walls and pets.  Actually we don’t have any pets, but if we did, I would be tempted to steam clean the family dog.  My review of the Shark Portable Steam Pocket is that it works.

Right side steam cleaned

It comes with a bunch of attachments and replacement cover pads.  It quickly and easily removes carpet stains.  Our micro suede recliner used to be a banana yellow, but like most bananas it started to look like a leopard after awhile…  but the Shark Portable Steam Pocket got the spots out – not perfectly, but pretty close.

Right side grout steam cleaned

I also discovered that our tile grout is not actually brown after releasing the steam Shark on it – as you can see in this photo.

The only issue I found was the need to hold the trigger down all the time… so I fixed that by holding it down with the twisty tie that came wrapped around the cord.  I imagine it doesn’t have a trigger lock for safety reasons, because you could certainly kill some fire ants with this bad boy.

As I mentioned our kids stain the walls – especially the walls that make up the corner that we send them to when they are in trouble.  So I found myself using one of the attachments to steam clean the wall… which is when I realized I need to stop drinking coffee.

Editor’s Note:  Although it is hard to see in the photo, the Shark Portable Steam Pocket did do a fantastic job cleaning the recliner, which I was certain would have to be professionally cleaned or reupholstered.
