Free Fun For Families: January 1-8

Sunday, January 1New Years Day @ Pinnacle Mountain State Park 9:00am – 4:00pm
Looking for something to do New Year’s Day? Pinnacle Mountain State Park has something for everyone. At 9am there’s an Intermediate Level First Day Hike up the West Summit of Pinnacle Mountain. Let’s Talk About Turtles begins at 10 a.m. Learn the difference between a red-eared slider and a three-toed box turtle, view, a live specimen, and make your own paper plate turtle to take home. Knot-Tying Basics is at 1 p.m. in the park visitor center. Learn the basics of knot tying and the uses of these knots. A Beginner Level Hike around the 1/2 mile, paved Kingfisher trail starts at 2pm. The 3 p.m. session is I Ate a Bug. Have you ever eaten a bug before? Meet a park interpreter at the visitor center to try a bug or two. Become a member of the “I Ate a Bug” club! Tuesday, January 3 Eagle Tour @ Lake Dardanelle State Park, 10:00am
Lake Dardanelle State Park is proud to offer free winter lake cruises for the best chance of seeing our national symbol, the American bald eagle. Many other spectacular birds may also be in the area for viewing including American white pelicans, ducks, and snow geese. Please dress warmly as temperatures and winds can be more severe on the lake. Call the visitor center at (479) 967-5516  to reserve your seat. We will begin boarding 15 minutes before the tour, at the boat dock near the Fishing Tournament Weigh-In Facility. Also, in case of inclement weather, call 1 hour before tour time for possible cancellations.

Wednesday, January 4 – Wee Little Art Workshop @ The Wonder Place 9:30am or 11:00am
The Wonder Place recently expanded and now has four rooms for birthday parties and classes.  One of the classes that will be offered is art classes from Wee Little Arts.  This week you can sign up for a free preview class. Workshops are suitable for kids ages 2 and up, with 8 spots available per class.  The workshops are free, but you will need to pay  Wonder Place admission if you plan to play at the Wonder Place before or after your class.  To sign up, call the Wonderplace at 501-225-4050.

Wednesday, January 4Wednesday Walk-About @ Pinnacle Mountain State Park 2:00pm – 4:00pm
Meet a park interpreter at the Visitor Center for an adventure through forest and field as we go off-trail and explore some of our favorite secluded spots. Wear sturdy shoes and natural colors of the forest for best results. These hikes tend to be moderately strenuous.  Binoculars and water are welcome and recommended! Saturday, January 7Free Kid’s Workshop @ Your Local Home Depot, 9:00am – 12:00 pm
These workshops teach children do-it-yourself skills, tool safety, and instill a sense of pride and accomplishment. All kids get to keep their craft and receive a FREE Kids Workshop Apron, commemorative pin and certificate of achievement. This month’s project is a Savings Shed (coin bank)! Workshops are designed for children ages 5 – 12.

Saturday, January 7Happy New Year Herps! @ Pinnacle Mountain State Park 1:00pm-2:00pm
What is a herp? Learn about the animals considered herps in the animal kingdom today with a park interpreter in the Visitors Center Discover Room. Amphibians and reptiles are the stars of the program, showcasing several reptiles housed in the visitor center.
