Motherhood: A Day in the Life #2 – Stephanie M

Working mom, toddler mom, blogging mom

You know that moment when you become aware that you are awake and you can tell its light outside, but you haven’t yet opened your eyes? That moment that’s peaceful for about one fifteenth of second until you panic and think, “Oh no! Have I overslept.”

I hate that moment because it is immediately followed with all kinds of internal negotiations about exactly what time I need to get out of bed in order to get ready and leave for work in time. Five more minutes if I don’t shave my legs. 10 more minutes if I don’t use conditioner. Or a full thirty minutes if I don’t make my lunch, which is usually followed by, “Oh yeah! I packed my lunch last night.”

This internal struggle only happens Monday through Friday, though, because on Satursday mornings my sweet, darling, precious three-year-old wakes up at the crack of dawn. Just for funsies. She never wakes up early on Tuesdays or Thursdays. Just Saturdays.

After the panic > negotiation > panic cycle I slide out of bed and head straight for the coffee pot before starting the shower > Today Show > hair > makeup cycle, which is immediately followed by the All-of-my-clothes-are-out-of-style sequence. Finally, I put on my fabulous (and very in style, thank you very much) pair of Tory Burch wedges, and run out the door, grabbing my lunch bag, laptop bag and gym bag on the way just after kissing Steve and Charlie good-bye.

On the way to work I don’t usually listen to anything because this is my time to prepare mentally for my day.

At work I spend most of my day sitting at my laptop, occasionally getting up to get more coffee because I need energy for all of that sitting.

Sometimes somebody says something funny at work. But most of the time we all stare at our laptops. Really. It’s dull to hear about, so I won’t bore you.

Okay, here’s a synopsis: email, email, chat with Precious, email, meeting, Facebook crisis, coffee, email, conference call, task management, email, chat with precious. The end.

After all of that exhausting typing I’ve done I have to muster the energy to stand up out of my rolling chair and hurl myself down the highway toward the gym where I will stare at a TV while only my legs move in a very fast fashion. This is normal, right?

Treadmills are just weird.

By the end of my run it’s usually about 6:30 p.m. Time to throw something from the freezer into a skillet and open a can of corn, so that the whole family can gather together on the couch and stare at a glowing box on the wall. You can read my nutritious living blog here (no. not really.).

Totally normal.

But wait, I’m not done. We still have two more hours of sedentary family bonding in front of the TV. This. Is. Living.

Actually, 6:30 p.m to 8:30 p.m. is my favorite part of the whole day because that is Charlie time. We do watch some TV, but mostly during those two hours we play, we sing, we laugh and we snuggle, trying to pack as much in as humanly possible. That little stinker cracks me up.

By the time she goes to bed my brain is done and I want nothing more than to plop down on the couch and truly stare blankly at the glowing teevee on my wall, but I know in the back of my sleepy little head that I need to be blogging because this is my time. This is Stephanie time. This is my window. Sometimes, though, the blackout curtains on my “window” are just closed.
