Healthy Happy Meals

Healthy Happy Meals

McDonalds recently announced that they will be taking steps to make their Happy Meals healthier. They are reducing the fry portion size and adding apple slices to all Happy Meals.  Does this mean lunch at Ronald’s is a nutritionally sound choice?  I’m going to vote NO. On the other hand, I make the healthiest happy meals around. See?  Don’t these lunches look happy?  They make my kids happy too.  I started making “happy meals” as a way … Read entire article »

Resolutions: Looking Back, Moving Forward

New Year’s Resolutions are an interesting thing.  Everyone has an opinion about them.  Some folks thrive on them, and others think they are evil.  Personally, I’m a big fan.  I like the concepts of change and renewal, especially the kind I can control. First, I want to take a look back at 2010’s resolutions. 1. Eat More Local Food. Hearing Joel Salatin speak really inspired me to make this change. We shopped at the Farmers Markets in both Little Rock and North Little Rock, and also enjoyed shopping and lunching at the new Argenta Market.  We are  SOO thankful for our friends and neighbors, Meredith Neesvig and her parents Randy and Elaine Hankins, who brought us loads of produce from their farm in Ash Grove, MO.  Funny that we moved to Arkansas … Read entire article »

A Newbie’s Experience with Race for the Cure

Welcome guest blogger Stephannie Baker, who recently completed her first ever 5k at Arkansas Race for the Cure... If you had asked me one year ago if I was a runner, I would have told you that I am just not biologically cut out for it.  I have always been relatively fit but not athletic.  Sure, I can handle some yoga, some weight training.  But cardio?  Not so much.  I was that girl at the gym who would run on a treadmill for about 1 minute and get so out of breath that my ribs would hurt and my thighs would itch.  I really just assumed there was something wrong with me. But I love obstacle courses, at it brings some kind of adventure into my life. You will get what I … Read entire article »

Running the Hills

Today I ran Wildwood Park’s inaugural RunWild 5K.  It was a great point to point course with some small rolling hills that somehow managed to end with almost a half mile of downhill.  It got me thinking about my high school cross country coach, Loyal Kaeding, who taught me how to run hills.  At the time, the lesson was strictly about running, but I’ve heard the words of his lessons play through my head many times over the past 18 years. Coach Kaeding’s methods for running uphill were simple:  Pump your arms, bend your knees, dig in with your toes. If you are running on a trail and the hill is steep enough, use your hands to pull yourself up the hill. Living in Central Arkansas, I still run up literal … Read entire article »

Race for the Cure 2010 – Get your pink on!

Race for the Cure 2010 – Get your pink on!

I got my Race for the Cure shirt in the mail yesterday, which means it’s almost time for the big event.  This year’s event is October 16th.  It is my third year to run in the Little Rock Race for the Cure, a race that I am absolutely in love with.  I’ve blogged about it before here and here. The big draw for me is the purpose of the event (fighting breast cancer via screenings … Read entire article »

Triathlon Training Tool: Go! Running

As you might recall, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to complete  a triathlon this summer.  I’ve begun training, and have a couple potential races picked out, but I’ve been extremely underwhelmed by the presence of a triathlete “community” in Arkansas.  Luckily, I have found one great resource: Go! Running, a new local running store here in Little Rock. I was surprised when I stopped in at Go! Running several weeks ago for a look-around. I found one corner of the store stocked with triathlon apparel, and tri racing shoes winked at me from the middle of the well-stocked shoe wall. Turns out that the owners, Gary and Erin Taylor, are both phenomenal runners who ran at the collegiate level for University of Arkansas.  Gary is a certified USA Triathlon … Read entire article »
