A Peek At Easter

A Peek At Easter

Nancy and I met through PTA, quickly figured out that we are both writers, have little boys the same age, and that *gasp* we are both bloggers.  It doesn’t sound that significant, but it would if you lived here in our small town.  I’m so excited to know Nancy and call her a real life friend, and to be sharing her writing with you today. Living away from extended family has its perks… for example, no … Read entire article »

Talking to My Teenager, Kinda

Talking to My Teenager, Kinda

Today’s guest blogger is Angie Albright. I love her because she is funny and frank and because she and I are two of the few who have broken the covenant of people with “real” English degrees by venturing into blogging. I am the mother of a 16-year-old boy. I’m not dead yet but my hair is getting grayer at a faster pace than it was two years ago. Parents moan and groan all the time about … Read entire article »

Easter Craft: Tin Foil Easter Egg

This post is from Deirdre at JDaniel4’s Mom.  She is truly one of the sweetest bloggers I have ever met and is well known for her adorable crafts and incredibly creative lunches. I am so excited about guest posting here on Instead of the Dishes. I met Fawn last spring at the Type A Conference. We had both volunteered to help at the conference. I  had the best time talking about blogging and hearing about her … Read entire article »

My First Spring Break With a Minivan

My First Spring Break With a Minivan

Today’s guest blogger, Heather Davis, is known for her witty humor and wisdom and you’ll see why in her post.  I met Heather last year at the Arkansas Women Bloggers conference, even though she is from Oklahoma and I’m from Missouri.  Apparently we’re both party crashers. My younger daughter was born at the end of January, when it was really too cold to do anything but stay inside and cuddle up with a powder-y smelling baby … Read entire article »

When 4 x 8 = Frustration and Tears…Check out These Free Teaching Ideas!

Whether it’s your own memories of struggling with “new math” or dealing with your child’s incomprehensible math homework, I think we can all relate to this blog post from my friend Dan.  I’ve found that he almost always knows exactly what he is talking about, so I’m glad to have these resources for future use…because I’m sure that 2nd grade math will be way beyond me. The past few months, I have watched as my daughter struggled to memorize her multiplication tables- especially the “4’s”. At times, it was as frustrating for her to learn them as it was for me to watch! Fortunately, math always came easily to me. I even remember my 3rd grade teacher’s “multiplication worksheet center” where the math was self-taught and self-paced.  My parents did flash cards … Read entire article »
