Displaying Kid Art

Lately I’ve been seeing some great ideas online for displaying kid art in fun and tasteful ways. And, with school starting back up, the amount of art available to display is going to skyrocket. So, I thought I would share the makeover that Craig did on our “Wall in the Hall” where we hang all our kids’ art.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, it’s great to have a handy hubby.  This is yet another project that Craig did on his own while I was out of town.  I had been talking about doing this project for some time, but of course Craig is with Elvis – he likes less talk and more action.

So, here’s the before picture:

And Here is the After:

Craig used four simple supplies for this project:

  • Heavy metal binder clips
  • Small binder clips
  • Picture hanging wire
  • Epoxy Glue

First, Craig painted the wall to cover up all the spots where the tape I was using to hang pictures had ripped the paint off.  He measured and cut equal lengths of picture hanging wire, and then tied each end of the wire to the hinge of the heavy metal binder clips (look for these where office supplies are sold).  In the photo below you can see how the wire is tied to the clip:

Craig then used the epoxy glue to glue the heavy metal clips to the wall. I imagine there was some measuring and marking involved, but Craig likes us all to think that he just popped it up there and got it right the first time (and maybe he did…).

And finally, he added small binder clips to the wire to use as hangers.  I love this, as it means I don’t have to punch holes in anything, and I also don’t have to go through rolls and rolls of tape! And, the kids can even hang their own art on the lowest wire. For our style and the location of the wall, this was a perfect solution to our picture hanging woes!  Thanks Craig!

Fellow Arkie blogger Stephanie at Evolved Mommy had a guest post yesterday with several ideas on how to display children’s art.

My friend and soon to be mommy of two boys, Hilary at The Sweet Life of a Stay at Home Mom, created this space to display art in her kitchen using curtain rods (scroll down past Curt Warner).

And finally, Real Simple has a great slide show collection of ways to display and store your child’s art collection.

How do you curate your kids’ art?  How do you store what you keep?

Hey Fawn! The easiest and most space efficient way I have found to STORE year after year of kids art (I have 3) is to use pizza boxes. Most of the time you can pick up a few carryout boxes from your favorite pizzeria (many times for free). They are thin, stackable and large enough for almost any art piece. Each child has a box for each year of school and I label the sides. Decorating their box for the year also makes a nice rainy day project at home. We used to take digital photos of their cool art, but it’s just not the same as having it available to hold 🙂

Great idea Alena! I love the idea of having the kids decorate the boxes too. I do the digital photos thing right now, but I also have a big box full of art that is not organized at all! So, I need about five pizza boxes to retro-fit my storage needs – time to visit the pizza place!

I really like this idea and the flexibility of it! would be super cute in the kitchen with Christmas-only art!

Recently started a kids’ art wall near our laundry room and purchased ready-made black frames at Michael’s…love walking by them every day!

Funny that you mention those two locations – our art wall is in the hallway between the kitchen and the laundry room!

I love just a little bit of structure brings the whole wall into order! We soooo need to do this in our den, where our daughter’s art work is plastered all over the walls.

I included a link to your project on my Craft Weekend Inspiration. (I used your “after” photo in my post – I hope that was okay.) –Anne
