Stitch Fix for the Fashion-Challenged

From the pre-teen years when everyone had leather jackets and swatch watches except me, to high school when I rotated the same 7ish outfits very carefully on a schedule, and on into motherhood, when my five year old daughter told me, “I want to be like you mom and not care about what I wear – you know, not very fashiony.” I am not very stylish. I never have been.

And then my husband read an article in a magazine about Stitch Fix. The fact that I learned about Stitch Fix from my husband probably speaks volumes.  Anyway, we decided I should try it.  This is my report after receiving my first “Fix”.

If you don’t know what Stitch Fix is, read this paragraph first.  If you do, skip to the next paragraph.

Stitch Fix is an online personal stylist service. You fill out a style profile, and pay a $20 styling fee/deposit.  Next, you’ll receive your “Fix” in the mail – five items picked for you by your personal stylist. You have three days to try on the clothes at home and decide what you want to keep. The $20 styling fee will be credited toward your purchase as long as you keep at least one item. You return the items you don’t want in a big prepaid envelope, and your credit card is charged for the items you keep.  If you keep all five items, you get 25% off the total price.

When the Stitch Fix box arrived, I was pleased to see that the color pallet was mostly green and blue – my two favorite colors.

First I tried on the Corinna Heathered Striped Dolman Sleeve Top with the Denna Skinny Jean.

I liked both of them, but I already have a pair of very similar jeans, so the pants went back.  I kept the top.  It’s not anything I would have picked off of a rack, but that’s one of the interesting things about Stitch Fix – you get to try things you wouldn’t normally pick for yourself.

Next up, the Carmelita Crew Neck Layered Sweater.

stitch fix6I did not like the cut, the texture, or the fit of this sweater at all.  It also seemed a little odd to be trying on a sweater in May.  I returned this one.

Round three – the Alan Cowl Neck Asymetrical Cardigan.

I was so excited about this one! I really loved it, but it was a size too small. I was so sad. However, I googled the name of the cardigan and found another stitch fix blog post that mentioned that it was also sold by ModCloth. So, I bought it in the next size up, and it fits perfectly. I would never have just gone and bought this online, but since I got to try it on at home, I felt comfortable placing the order.

And finally, the fifth item – the Lara Bicycle Print Infinity Scarf

Stitch Fix Lara Bicycle Print Infinity ScarfI really liked this scarf, but it was priced at $36. That’s about three times as much as I would normally pay for a scarf, so I returned it too.

So, ultimately, I only kept the Corinna top, but I liked all but one of the items I received.  I’ve ordered a second Stitch Fix, and it is on it’s way!   So far, I like Stitch Fix because it allows me to try on and purchase clothes in the comfort and convenience of my own closet.  I don’t have a lot of time or motivation to shop for clothes, so it’s a nice little treat. I will say that many of the items are priced higher than what I normally pay for my clothes. I recognize though that the added prices pay for the stylist and the shipping costs.

If you want to learn more about Stitch Fix or try it out for yourself, visit the Stitch Fix website.  If you follow this link and decide to sign up, I will receive a $25 referral credit.

Here’s my post on my second Stitch Fix.

You look so dang cute in all of them!

  2. Very cute! I have used SF a couple of times and I usually get 1-2 items that I really love. Especially as a busy mom it’s hard to find the time to go shopping!

I agree Sarah! I’m not very good at visualizing what I already have in my closet when I’m at the store, so I like that this lets me try new items on with the things I already have.

Thanks Debbie. You are so sweet!

  5. Fawn, I love to shop… but don’t have the time these days. I find myself buying clothes on-line more than I ever thought I would. SF sounds so fun and exciting, even though I like shopping, I might have to try it. The Alan Cowl Neck Asymetrical Cardigan was my favorite!
