There's a Word for That: Tricky D

Remember that G Love song called Cold Beverage?  The refrain was, “Stick it in the fridge, stick it in the fridge, stick it in the fridge. Stick it in the fridge.”

So, how come the word fridge has a D in it when the word refrigerator does not?  (Even though I try to stick a d in refrigerator every time I type it.)

This is a word-related question that I couldn’t find a direct, definitely correct answer for.  What do you think?

That always made me wonder too. English is a nutty language, isn’t it? Glad it’s my mother-tongue. My hubby always sang that stupid song- think it was out when he worked at a liquor store…

Am I too old? I don’t know that song.

My guess is people just wrote it phonetically. They “heard” the d in it so they wrote it that way?

Good theory on the D. In regard to the song, it wasn’t really mainstream, but I think it was used in a commercial. So, it might not be your age, but rather, your taste in music. G. Love is kind of a B-list type of guy, although I love his stuff. Ever heard “My Baby’s Got Sauce?”
