This One Time, At Walmart…

Walmart. Blech. Just a couple days ago, I was telling my friend Sarah how I DO NOT shop at Walmart, ever. I don’t like the way every store is laid out differently so you can’t find anything, I don’t like the people that shop there, I don’t like what it does to small business, and I don’t like the way the company is run in general.

So, I really was in a little bit of shock when I found myself here:

We weren’t even there to get presents! Craig had found something work-related he needed that was one of the “Event 1” specials. (Walmart divided their black Friday madness into 3 “events” this year.) I, in a tryptophan-induced mis-judgement, thought it would be interesting to get a glimpse of the Black Friday madness. Luckily, Event 1 started at 8pm, so we left the kids at Grandma’s to play while we braved the crowds.  Although I wasn’t that brave.  When we walked in, Craig, who is the Black Friday ninja of our household, started to make a bee-line for the back of the store.  I fell behind as I gaped at the people camping in the isles, laying over large cellophane wrapped crates of electronics, and using shopping carts as battering rams. “Hold my hand!” I hollered at Craig.

We got to the back of the store at about 7:45 and settled in to wait until 8:00, when workers would open the crates.  But, at about 7:55, pack mentality kicked in, and the shoppers started tearing open the goods on their own!  Again, I was stupefied.  It started in one corner of the store – we couldn’t see it, but we could hear the ruckus of plastic and cardboard being shredded and people yelling.  It spread quickly down the main isles, crate by crate, like fireworks going off.

In the end, we didn’t get what we had come for.  We did score a movie that Craig had been wanting and one babbling, peeing baby doll that Carina had on her wish list.In the process, I also got a huge dose of Walmart. I saw strangers yelling at one another, butt cracks, meth heads, exasperated employees, and riotous-type conditions. It was enough to last me a very, very long time.

Later today I’ll have a post up with some small business Saturday shopping ideas.  Yes indeed.

  1. I CAN NOT BELIEVE you went to that store!!!! And, on Black Friday, you continually surprise me.

I finally found someone who dislikes walmart as much as I do. I used to go there in the small town I’m from, just because it was literally the only place to buy a lot of stuff. But now…..I cringe at the very idea. It’s been probably five years since I’ve stepped foot in there…..and my visits in the five or so years before that were very few…. Whenever I tell someone I don’t go there, about walmart, they look at me like I have three heads. So, from one person who dislikes walmart to another, I can’t believe you went….on black Friday! Lol. And this is also coming from someone who loves black Friday and it’s craziness and thinks nothing of shopping for 16+ hours straight which is what black Friday usually means for me!

This year I completely missed black Friday all together. Did you find any good deals?
