2013 Plans and Goals

Looking back, 2012 held a lot of unrest and transition for my family and I.  Looking forward, 2013 is shaping up for more transition, but as always, we are transitioning to better things. Craig and I often play the game of, “If I had told you five years ago that we would be doing this right now, would you believe it?” and the answer is always no.  But, I run under the mantra (learned the hard way) that everything happens for a reason, and life and kids have instilled in me the knowledge and some small level of comfort with the fact that I am not in control.

This week marks the last week that Craig will be working in Little Rock.  Starting next week, he’ll do some work with some cosmetic dental services in madison heights mi here. We are all excited to have him here with us all the time, although I’m sure it will take some getting used too.  The extra days home over the holidays have already given Callen practice in asking the alternate parent when the first parent says no.  Having two parents around all the time is such a novel thing.

Little Grins DentalThe hugest part of our new year will certainly (hopefully) be the fact that we are opening a kid-friendly dental practice called Little Grins Dental in Springfield MO. If you are not sure what dentist you need visit https://civinsmiles.com/dental-and-oral-medicine/. This has been a quick development, and things continue to whip up at whirlwind speeds. We’re set to start construction on Monday and plan to open in mid-March! I’m learning so much every day, not only about building a business, but about dentistry, and about my husband and myself.  Meanwhile, our garage, bedroom, and office are turning into dental practice warehouses, storing everything from hand washing sinks to cash drawers to train tables. These days are stressful, but it’s for a good purpose.  It feels nice to finally be putting our hard work into something that benefits our family and our community directly rather than feeding energy into bureaucracy and thanklessness.

Our goal is to do great things with our little practice, for our patients and our staff, for our community, and for us.  We have a twitter account @LittleGrins a Facebook Page, and a website, so feel free to come over and follow along on our journey.  Although I whole-heartedly advised against it as a social media/marketing consultant, Craig really, really wanted to do a giveaway for a Kindle Fire, so that is up and running on the Facebook page.  Please take second to enter – I’d love to be able to give that Kindle to one of you wonderful readers.

As we transition from a geographically divided family to small business owners, I’m trying to keep my goals for the year from getting too lofty.  Here is what I’m thinking about so far:

  • Perfecting a family routine, which includes getting healthy and fit and designated one-on-one time for each parent with each child
  • Starting a new backyard garden
  • Starting a new bloggy website to feature and promote local family oriented activities, events, and businesses (I’m still wavering on this one)
  • Making some small improvements to our house like finishing our master closet renovation, actually hanging pictures on the walls, and possibly building a deck on the back (that might be too big of a project for this year though!)

But really, my biggest goal for the year is just to get us finally and officially settled in to this new phase of life so that we can enjoy ourselves and our friends and family, and to keep playing the “If I had told you five years ago…” game.

Do you have plans for 2013?  I’d love to hear them.

Oh, and this is officially my 400th post published on this blog!  Thanks for reading!

I’m proud of you guys! Your next mantra is “I can’t believe we did this”! Just wait and see. Things are happening fast. You will forget the stress. You will one day laugh at the things that caused so much stress. Finally in the end you will be so thrilled that you did this! We (Kev & I) are super excited for you. Hang in there! It does get better…I promise.
