Don’t Eat Organic

Don’t Eat Organic

At least, not all the time.  Like all habit-altering, budget-affecting decisions, delving into buying organic produce for your family can be overwhelming.  I thought these two lists might help.  You’ll have the greatest impact, ecologically and healthfully, if you try to buy produce from the first list organically.  The second list is a few items for you to cross off of your worry list. Produce with the most pesticide residues*: Apples Blueberries Bell Peppers Celery Potatoes Spinach Lettuce Kale & Collard Greens Strawberries Imported Nectarines Peaches Imported Grapes Items … Read entire article »

Boxtops for Education

Boxtops for Education

A few months after I starting playing the Grocery Game, I started collecting Boxtops.  I was amazed at how  many I had after just a few weeks.  Boxtops are little coupons that you find on many grocery items, such as Betty Crocker products, Juicy Juice, Chex Mix, Kleenex, and tons of other products.  Each coupon is worth 10 cents to your local school.  You simply save them and then turn them in to the school … Read entire article »

It’s Time for Some Entertainment

It’s Time for Some Entertainment

If you like to eat out, shop, or travel (who doesn’t like at least ONE of those things?)  then it’s time to get your copy of the 2012 Entertainment Book. The Entertainment Book contains over 400 coupons, many of which are BOGO for restaurant entrees, specifically for your local city or region.  I picked up my 2012 Entertainment Books last week, and was happy to find that there are $65 in Kroger coupons again this … Read entire article »

Frozen Assets: A cookbook for the rest of us

Frozen Assets: A cookbook for the rest of us

I have a really bad habit of checking books out from the library and then keeping them forever, avoiding late fees by renewing them online over and over and over.  Today I got one of those “Your library books will be overdue in three days” emails, and when I went online to renew, the system told me that I had renewed too many times.  Drat it all.  I suppose 5 months is a long time … Read entire article »

More Ways to Save on Groceries

I pay $7.25 per month to have the Sunday paper delivered to my house, specifically so I can get the coupon inserts. I would guesstimate that I typically save around $80 per month from these coupons in conjunction with playing The Grocery Game, so it’s a good investment. My neighbor also brings me her inserts, which helps when I am stocking up on something. You can also print coupons from the internet.  These coupons are often higher values that what comes in the paper, but you do have the cost of the ink and paper you use to print them.  There are hundreds of websites that have printable coupons available. Some are brand specific.  For example, you can print coupons for Betty Crocker products from http://www.bettycrocker.com/coupons-promotions/coupons/coupons.aspx.  Other sites offer a wide … Read entire article »

Playing the Grocery Game

When I became a mother, grocery shopping was very frustrating to me.  I could not believe how much I was spending every time I went to the grocery store, and still we would run out of food before the end of the week.  I felt like I was in a rut with food choices for the family; always buying the same items and cooking the same meals. Tonight I saved $195 on my groceries.  I spent $128, for a 61% savings.  I bought enough granola bars and cereal to last us a couple months, as well as some new food items we have never tried before.  This transformation in my shopping is because of GroceryGame.com. Back in December 2008, I heard about the Grocery Game website, and when I posted questions … Read entire article »
